Meet The Team
Aaron completed his PhD in chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Matthew Gaunt developing new strategies for the selective Pd-catalyzed β-C–H activation of aliphatic amines and methodology for the multicomponent synthesis of tertiary aliphatic amines via the photocatalytic reduction of alkyl iminium ions.
He then moved to Princeton University as a postdoctoral researcher working in the laboratory of Professor David MacMillan where he developed a platform for intracellular small-molecule target ID (μMap) based upon visible-light-mediated photocatalysis in collaboration with Merck (Cambridge, MA; Kenilworth, NJ).
In 2021, Aaron returned to Cambridge as a Marie-Curie Fellow investigating the multicomponent synthesis of chiral amines using photoredox catalysis.
Currently, Aaron is a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry at the University of Manchester.
Andre joined the lab in April 2023 as a PhD student investigating late-stage skeletal editing of complex molecules via methylene extrusion. Andre is Swiss, French, and Portuguese but was born and raised in Lausanne, Switzerland. He studied chemistry during his bachelor’s and master’s degree at EPFL, Switzerland. He completed his master's thesis and a graduate internship in the laboratory of Prof. Jerome Waser at EPFL, where he worked on photocatalyzed [3+2] cycloadditions of acceptor-only cyclopropanes. Outside of the lab, Andre enjoys cooking, football, or just discovering new bars and restaurants.
Ruth joined the lab in September 2023 as a PhD student and is researching visible light-mediated reactions. Ruth was born and raised in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. She completed her MChem degree at the University of Leeds, where she did an industrial placement in synthetic chemistry at GSK in her 3rd year. She completed her final year project under the supervision of Prof. Adam Nelson, where she worked on securing covalent probes using Rhodium-catalysed annulation. Outside of the lab, Ruth enjoys walking her dog, climbing and exploring new places in Manchester.
Rayyan joined the lab in September 2023 as an MSci student and is researching phosphorus(V) based porphyrins for red-light photoredox catalysis. Coming from Northern Ireland to Manchester for university, he undertook a placement in his 3rd year where he worked as a synthetic organic chemist in the process chemistry department at Pfizer. Whilst at Pfizer, he was part of a team that won the 10th National Retrosynthesis Competition. Outside of the lab, Rayyan enjoys football, cricket and squash, as well as finding new places to eat!
Ben joined the lab in January 2023 as an iCAT rotation student and is investigating photocatalytic alcohol transpositions. Ben was born in Lancashire and proceeded to complete his MChem degree at the University of Manchester with an industrial placement at AstraZeneca. He completed his final year project under Prof. Michael Greaney developing metal free aryl amine synthesis. Outside of the lab Ben enjoys running, hiking and football.
